5. Friction Roller Reverse Mechanism
The friction rollers turn opposite to the paper feed direction to return any
paper in contact with then to the paper stack when the tray moves down.
When the tray starts moving down,the tray drive wire turns the pulley
gear, and two idle gears transmit rotation to the delay gears. However, the
friction rollers do not start turning immediately.The delay gears have
about 30° of rotational play, and that delays the driving action of the fric-
tion rollers.This delay is long enough for the paper to separate from the
pick-up rollers.Therefore, the paper is not damaged when the friction rol-
lers drive it back into the tray.
The delay gears have a compression spring that prevents the large delay
gear from damaging the friction roller drive gear when the tray is slid back
to its home.The gears do not mesh with each other immediately; however,
when the gears start turning, the spring makes the large delay gear mesh
with the friction roller drive gear.
