The pan placement graphic on the CHANNEL PAN page shows the combined effect of the
Pan Left-Right and Pan Front-Back controls.
A smaller version of this graphic remains above the channel fader graphic on all MIXER
CHANNEL subpages and MIXVIEW pages.
The Surround Panning controls are:
Pan Left-Right [Q1]has the same function as Pan in stereo mode, controlling left-
right placement of the channel audio.
Pan Front-Back [Q2] controls the relative level in the front and rear speaker sets (-
100 = full back, +100 = full front).
Divergence [Q3]controls the balance between three-way and two-way pan
laws across the front speakers. (center speaker ratio)
Divergence is only available in 5.1 Surround and in LCRS
modes, since there is no center speaker in 2+2 mode.
With Divergence set to 0% the pan law is three-way.
With FB Pan set to +100 (front), if the LR Pan control is central the channel audio will be fed
exclusively to the center speaker. As the LR pan is moved to the left the level will decrease in
the center speaker and increase in the front left speaker. As the LR pan is moved to the right
the level will decrease in the center speaker and increase in the front right speaker.
With Divergence set to 100% the pan law is two-way. (no signal to the center speaker)
With FB Pan set to +100 (front), if the LR Pan control is central the channel audio will be fed
equally to the front left and front right speakers (exactly the same as in stereo mode). As the
LR pan is moved to the left the level will decrease in the right speaker and increase in the left
speaker. As the LR pan is moved to the right the level will decrease in the left speaker and
increase in the right speaker.
Intermediate settings of the Divergence control will result in a balance between these two
situations. As a demonstration set the FB Pan to front, the LR Pan central and the Divergence
at 0%. The audio should be being fed exclusively to the center speaker. Now gradually in-
crease the divergence to 100%. You will hear the audio gradually Odiverge� from the center to
the front left and right speakers until there is no audio being fed to the center speaker at 100%.
The LR pan law for the rear speakers is always 2-way.
In addition, in 5.1 Surround mode there are two new controls relating to the Low Frequency
Effects (LFE) channel (the .1 in 5.1):
LFE ROUTE [F5/F6]controls the routing of the selected channel to the LFE bus.
The LFE Route control has three states:
LFE Route: OFF: Route to all components of the surround bus except the LFE component.
LFE Route: ALL: Route to all components of the surround bus including the LFE component.
LFE Route: LFE: Route only to the LFE component, and none to the other surround busses.
LFE Send Level [Q4] allows control over the level of signal sent to LFE for the se-
lected channel, in a similar way to an FX Send level control.
The LFE Send Level control is post-fader, and only comes into effect if the channel is routed
to the LFE component (i.e. if the LFE Route control is set to ALL or LFE) .
For paired (stereo) channels, the Pan Front-Back, Divergence, LFE Route and LFE Send Level
controls are linked.
